1. Initial Claim Submission Deadline

180 calendar days from Date of Service

Clean electronic 837P or 837I claims must be received and acknowledged by Veterans Affairs (VA Community Care Network / CCN) within this window. If a claim is rejected on front-end clearinghouse validation (Level 2), it is not considered received by Veterans Affairs (VA Community Care Network / CCN) until corrected and successfully re-transmitted.

2. Specific Filing Rules for VA CCN

Under MISSION Act, community providers must submit claims within 180 days of service.
Emergency care notifications must be made within 72 hours of admission.
Appeals can be submitted within 1 year of denial date.

3. Accepted Proof of Timely Filing

Official Proof Required by VA CCN

Optum CCN / TriWest electronic 277CA acceptance acknowledgment or VA Form 10-583 submission tracking.

Important: Screenshots from your internal billing software or electronic health record (EHR) showing the date a claim was created are not accepted by VA CCN as proof of submission. You must supply clearinghouse 277CA acceptance reports.
